Before joining the faculty at CCM, Elizabeth was a Professor of Theatre Arts for The Theatre Arts Department at California State University- Fresno. Additionally, she worked as a costume designer both regionally and off-Broadway where she collaborated on 4 world premieres for the NYC based theatrical company Waterwell. Professor Payne is a member of United Scenic Artists and the Costume Designer's Guild.

In 2017, she took a Leave-of-Absence from Fresno State for two years to serve as the associate costume designer for Conan, TBS.

As her interest in children's education is how she began teaching, Elizabeth has continued that work and was awarded the Fresno County of Education's Artist in Residence Grant for 2012. As part of this grant, she was placed with 4th, 5th, and 6th graders at William Saroyan Elementary and Edison-Bethune Charter Academy. The work was centered around collaborating with the students as they wrote, improv-ed, and directed their own one-act plays, culminating with a performance for their schools and the public.
